Western Region records its first case of Monkeypox?

The Western Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has denied news circulating on social media that the region has recorded its first case of Monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe.

Monkeypox primarily occurs in central and west Africa, often in proximity to tropical rainforests, and has been increasingly appearing in urban areas.

However, the virus has spread to Europe as the U.K and Portugal have confirmed cases.

In a communique released on Tuesday, May 24, the regional health directorate made it known there are no known cases recorded of the virus.

Also, an individual in the Ahanta West District reported to one of the health facilities with blisters and upon assessment, the case was not suggestive of Monkeypox.

They also made it known further investigation is underway.

Disease may spread via sexual contact: officials

Four of the cases detected in Britain self-identified as gay, bi-sexual or other men who have sex with men, the U.K. Health Security Agency said, adding evidence suggested there may be transmission in the community.

The agency in Britain urged men who are gay and bisexual to be aware of any unusual rashes or lesions and to contact a sexual health service without delay.
