Workers at Plantations Socfinaf Ghana (PSG), an oil palm plantation company in Daboase in the Wassa East District of the Western Region have embarked on a strike over poor working conditions from Monday, September 19.
The Skyy News team was at PSG to monitor the situation when some workers indicated that the company had breached the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Every effort to get the management to comply has proven futile.
They said they are being denied every incentive associated with the work, such as risk allowance, pension payment and bonuses.
The workers told Skyy News that the strike would continue for a week and clarified their demands.
A worker said, “The company has breached the CBA which we have forwarded our petition to the union but yet to get any feedback.”
“We work for 27 days but our salary is not calculated based on the number of days we work, PSG pays us for only 22 working days and the company is not ready to make amendments to this condition.”
“One of the conditions in the CBA is that we are to be made permanent workers after working for 10 years but some workers have worked for more than 10 years and are yet to be made permanent workers.”
“This is the second time we are embarking on a strike, our first strike was last three weeks and since the company did not heed our demands, we are embarking on another strike till they listen to us.”
Management of PSG is yet to make any comment on the strike.
