Political Cpp Elections

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is using technology to organise its Polling Station elections for the first time since 1992.

The Party said it had identified that the absence of Polling Station executives to run the affairs of the Party on the ground and mobilise the grassroots had bedevilled its fortunes over the years.

At the commemoration of the Party’s 73rd anniversary in Accra on Sunday, June 12, 2022, the CPP launched a short code (*920*277#) to “make it easy” for interested Ghanaians to become members of the Party using mobile phones.

The Party said interested applicants would only be required to enter their names and Voter Identification numbers to qualify as new members of the CPP.

The campaign, dubbed: “Operation takeover” seeks to mobilise a minimum of 5 million Ghanaians for action ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong-Kumankumah, National Chairperson of the CPP, told journalists that more than 800,000 positions were vacant at the Polling Station level.

She said although the Party had offices across the country, it did not have people to man them, hence the campaign.

She said she CPP was determined to organise its Polling Station elections this year in accordance with the Party’s Constitution and in compliance with a directive issued by its Council of Elders.

“We don’t have people at the Polling station that will mobilise voters for us. We must find the people at the Polling Station. The campaign we have launched today is the magic for CPP,” Nana Sarpong-Kumankumah said.

We need 17 executives for the various positions at the Polling Station level. There are 40,000 Polling Station and 6,200 electoral areas. In total, we are looking at 8,000 executives. If we have these numbers working for the Party on the ground, it will create magic,” she added.

Nana Sarpong-Kumankumah urged the youth to express interest in politics, and emphasised that the surest way to transform the country and create opportunities for the youth was through political power.

She said the youth played a leading role in the struggle for Ghana’s independence, adding that the CPP was open to offer the youth the platform to make a change in the country’s development paradigm.

The CPP was formed on June 12, 1949, by Dr Kwame Nkrumah to campaign for the independence of the Gold Coast.

It was the governing Party under the autonomous British colony of the Gold Coast from 1951 to 1957, and independent Ghana from 1957 to 1966.
