The Director of the Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Mr Abraham Amaliba has said he curses the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government anytime he passe by the Saglemi housing project located at Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.
That he said was because many Ghanaians had challenges securing decent accommodation yet the project capable of addressing the development had been left to rot by the government and quizzed why that should be the case.
Speaking on TV3 NewDay monitored by GhanaPlus.com on Thursday, September 23, he said the abandonment of such projects intended to bring some respite in the accommodation challenges was responsible for the huge numbers of containers and kiosk used as residential apartment in the capital city.
“When I am traveling to Ho, when I take the Sogakope road and I see those houses Saglemi almost completed, I curse this government because when I see the number of people who cannot afford or who are looking for accommodation and cannot get and yet those houses are let there to rot because they claim there is some act of corruption, where is the logic in this. Can’t you complete it for project so that people can live in the houses and you can engage in your prosecution, why should prosecutor hinder the completion of the houses for people to go in,” he said.
2021 Population Census: 20% of structures were metal containers, kiosks, and wooden structures
Mr Amaliba made the comment while speaking about the provisional result of the 2021 Population Census released by the Ghana Statistical Service on Wednesday, September 22.
According to the data announced by the Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim out of the 10.7 million structures listed, 20% were metal containers, kiosks, and wooden structures.
2021 Census: 20% metal containers, kiosks, wooden structures blame governments
The NDC member blamed the development on past and present government adding ”In the case of the housing for me is a complete failure on the part of our governments”
He added until government made an intentional commitment and institute policies to address the housing deficits by providing affordable houses, the development would continue to persist until time in memorial since it borders on demand and supply.
Saglemi Housing Project
The Saglemi Housing Project a 5000-residential unit facility began in 2012 under the administration of the late President John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills.
The project located at Prampram in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region is sited on a 300-acre land with one to three-bedroom flats for low-income earners and was expected to ease the accommodation deficit in the country.
Phase One of the US$200 million project saw the construction of 180 blocks comprising over 1,500 flats
However, the US$200 million project had been left to rot as it had been shredded in controversies following allegations of corruption by the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP).
