MP for Sekondi and member of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP), Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer has said the opposition, National Democratic Congress(NDC) is abusing the ousted Member of Parliament for Assin North, Mr Gyakye Quayson and he is willingly participating.
He made the comment on TV3 NewDay on Monday, June 19, 2023, monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
“…..This gentleman, I don’t know the NDC is abusing him, the Gyakye Quayson man and he is willingly participating in that abuse,” he said.
“… I am very clear in my mind that he is headed for jail based on Adamu Sakande’s precedent that was set that if you make a declaration which turns to be false you have committed a crime against section 180 of the Criminal Offenses Act and you will be incarcerated and I expect that he will go to jail”.
He said he had no doubt at all that the embattled MP is going to jail for forgery and lying to the Ghanaian public about his dual citizen status as at the time he filed his nomination to be elected as MP for Assin North in the 2020 elections.
He made the comment while contributing to the ongoing political campaigns at the Assin North Constituency towards the forth-coming by-elections following the annulment of Mr Quayson’s election as Member of Parliament by the Supreme Court of Ghana.
Expunge his name from Parlaiment- Supreme Court Gyakye Quayson
The Court declared his election was unconditional and ordered an expunction of his name from Parliament and a by-election to re-elect a new MP for the area on on May 17 for holding a Canadian citizenship at the time of filing for nomination.
He is also facing criminal charges for same.
But Quayson has since filed to re-elected by his people to represent them in parliament.
However, Mr Egyapa Mercer thinks that that his political party, the NDC is only using him.
