2021 AFCON: Ghana suffer elimination after failing to win a single group game

Ghana has suffered elimination from the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament after failing to win a single match in the group stage.

Nicknamed the Black Stars, the national team of the West African country started the campaign ongoing in Cameroon with a 1-0 defeat to Morocco.

Subsequently, on matchday 2, Ghana faced off with Gabon and only recorded a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.

Today the Black Stars locked horns with Comoros in a decisive game to decide the fate of the team.

Following a very bad start to today’s contest, Ghana conceded in as early as the fourth minute when El Fardou Ben scored with a fine effort to give Comoros the lead.

In the quest to push for a way back, Ghana’s situation went from bad to worse as captain Andre Ayew was giving the marching orders for a challenge on the Comoros goalkeeper.

Forced to play with 10 men, Ghana conceded another goal in the 61st minute of the second half.

Although Richmond Boakye Yiadom and Alexander Djiku would both score to draw parity for the Black Stars, a late goal from Ahmed Mogni to complete his brace powered Comoros to a historic 3-2 win at the end of the 90 minutes.

Courtesy of the result, Ghana finishes bottom of Group C with just a single point. It is a performance not enough to see the side progress to the knockout stage of the 2021 AFCON.
