Avoid night travels – GFA advise clubs after Ashanti Gold’s encounter with armed robbers

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has advised clubs to avoid travelling at night after games.

The caution follows Ashanti Gold SC’s ordeal on Sunday night while returning from Accra to Obuasi after the 2-1 defeat to Heart of Oak.

In an official club statement on Monday morning, Ashgold SC said the team got “attacked by armed robbers on our way back from Accra at Assin Endwa. The robbers shot three bullets at the front bulletproof glass as the team driver meandered his way through a terrible scene of gunshots.”

Having received the news, the Ghana FA says it is shocked by the unfortunate armed robbery attack.

Through an official communique, the GFA has “urge travelling clubs to avoid night travels, and where required engage the security services or seek security advice before making trips.”

While noting that it is pleased no player or official of the Ashanti Gold SC travelling party was injured, the GFA says it will further engage the Ghana Police Service in providing adequate security support to teams when they travel across the country.
