Christian Atsu defends decision to join Chelsea FC

Ghanaian winger has mounted a spirited defence of his decision to join English giants Chelsea.

Atsu joined Chelsea FC in 2013 after excelling at FC Porto in Portugal and had a forgettable 4 spell at West London.

During four years as a Chelsea employee, Atsu embarked upon five loans in three countries, but never made a first-team appearance for the first team. Atsu came to embody Chelsea’s controversial loan system and some have questioned his career move.

However the player in a defiant manner has insisted it was the right move. “That was the right decision that I made, If someone tells me this road is wrong, they must know what would have happened if I’d stayed at Porto. Would I be at a big European club now? Maybe, but nobody can tell me that for certain. If Chelsea want to sign you, how can you say no? I believed I could make it at Chelsea so I went there. It didn’t happen but that does not make it a bad move.” he said.

Atsu’s club career has taken a nosedive since that spell. He became settled at Newcastle United under Rafael Benitez but came to endure a tough 18-24 months when the Spaniard left the club.

With Steve Bruce at the helm, Atau found game time hard to come by and was relegated to the club’s U-23 side for the entirety of last season.

He’s now a free agent after he leaving Tyneside this summer.
