Don’t blame Akonnor for Black Stars abysmal performance – Amankwah Mireku
Former Hearts of Oak captain and Black Stars defender Amankwah Mireku has urged Ghanaians not to blame coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor for Ghana’s uninspiring performance against South Africa in the World Cup qualifiers.
The Black Stars succumbed to a 1-0 defeat away to the Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the FnB Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday.
Maritzburg United forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane strike in the dying embers of the game settled the encounter.
The defeat has led to many Ghanaian fans calling for the sacking of coach Akonnor.
However, in an interview with Takoradi-based Ahoto FM, the former Hearts of Oak right-back expressed Akonnor must not be blamed as he strongly believes players make coaches in football.
“Ghana lack quality players and at the same time consistency. If CK Akonnor is able to keep this current squad for a longer period, they will perform extraordinary, but it will also be disastrous for us if we call the players today and eject them tomorrow for a different squad”
“Footballers make coaches so if players are not performing, it affects the coach so Akonnor shouldn’t be blamed for the team’s abysmal performance.”
Black Stars return to action with a doubleheader against Zimbabwe next month.
