Ex-Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr sympathizes with Super Eagles after World Cup elimination

Former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has backed the Super Eagles to bounce back after failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, hence the Black Stars sealed qualification on the away goals rule.

Thomas Partey gave Ghana the lead against the run of play in the 10th minute before Watford defender William Trost-Ekong levelled from the penalty spot 12 minutes later after Ademola Lookman was judged to have been fouled in the box.

Ghana’s qualification denied Nigeria a fourth successive outing at the World Cup finals.

“I hope that Nigeria will come back and the players we have will fight together again and write a better page in future for Nigeria football,” Rohr was quoted by Brila.net as saying.

The Nigeria Football Federation sacked Rohr as head coach just a few weeks before the start of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon and was by Augustine Eguavoen who has stepped down as Super Eagle boss.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place from November 21 to December 18.
