More misery for Nigeria as Super Eagles miss out on N5.6bn from FIFA after World Cup elimination

The Super Eagles of Nigeria failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar sees them lose €12.2m (N5.6bn) from football’s governing body, FIFA.

FIFA increased the qualifying bonus from €10m to €12.2m to help the qualified teams prepare well for the global showpiece.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) received €10m from FIFA when they qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Super Eagles failed to reach a fourth successive outing at the World Cup finals after drawing 1-1 against Black Stars of Ghana in the reverse leg game.

Thomas Partey opened the scoring for Ghana against the run of play in the 10th minute, before William Trost-Ekong levelled from the penalty spot 12 minutes later after Ademola Lookman was judged to have been fouled in the box.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place from November 21 to December 18.
