Nigeria players 'don’t have character' - Augustine Eguavoen on World Cup elimination

Augustine Eguavoen has fired Nigeria players, saying they ‘don’t have character’ after failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in the return leg encounter of the World Cup final play-offs after a goalless draw in the first leg in Kumasi, hence the Black Stars sealed qualification on the away goals rule.

Ghana’s qualification denied Nigeria a fourth successive outing at the World Cup finals.

“I don’t see myself as a failure, I don’t have regret taking the Super Eagles job. I can’t reject the call to serve,” Eguavoen said while appearing as a guest on Monday Night Football on Supersport.

“Maybe the Super Eagles players don’t have the character, I used the word maybe. I also think the emotion was overwhelming.”

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place from November 21 to December 18.
