Preview of Caf Champions League: Al Ahly v Raja Casablanca

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to continental club action from the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup this weekend, with matches scheduled for Friday 15, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April 2022.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

The action opens in the CAF Champions League on the evening of Friday 15 April, with ES Setif welcoming Esperance de Tunis to Algiers for the first leg of their quarterfinal clash.

Saturday then features the other three first-leg matches from the quarterfinals, starting in the early evening with Petro de Luanda welcoming Mamelodi Sundowns to the Angolan capital for an all Southern African battle.

Sundowns are regarded as the favourites, but co-coach Rulani Mokwena has warned the Brazilians not to underestimate their opponents: “Petro are a very good side with good Champions League experience, they’ve been here for three seasons in a row,” said the tactician.

“It’s their first time in the quarterfinals but what we’ve seen in the group is that they are a very capable team, they’ve scored nine and conceded eight. To accumulate 11 points in a difficult group for them means they are a very good team.”

The late evening then features African champions Al Ahly hosting Raja Casablanca in Cairo, as well as CR Belouizdad at home to Wydad Casablanca in Algiers.

Ahly manager Pitso Mosimane has backed his team to put an unconvincing group phase campaign behind them: “Our performance was unstable throughout the group stage, but it’s a marathon and the important part is that we qualified,” said the Red Devils’ boss.

“We will be fully focused on the upcoming Champions League games, it’s normal for Al Ahly players to fight for every title. I trust my players and I know they are doing their best to win.”

Sunday 17 April brings a quartet of first-leg, quarterfinal matches from the CAF Confederation Cup, starting off in the early evening with Tanzanian heavyweights Simba SC hosting Orlando Pirates in Dar Es Salaam.

Pirates co-coach Mandla Ncikazi says his team will look to go as far as possible in the CAFCC: “Pirates should be in the stages where they are in at the moment and we will try go further and possibly win it,” said the Buccaneers’ tactician.

“Pirates have quality. You could see that we are a team that wants to dominate matches and use the ball well. We have a pool of players coming back from injuries and other situations and we want to go as far as we can.”

The late evening has three clashes from North Africa: in Benghazi, Al Ittihad welcome Al Ahly for a Tripoli derby; Cairo sees Pyramids FC welcome TP Mazembe; and Alexandria features a battle between Al Masry and RS Berkane.
