A Senior Lecturer of the University of Professional Studies (UPS) in Accra, Dr Kwaku Mensah Mawutor has quizzed the purpose of the One Hundred Thousands dollars ($100,000. 00) gymnastic fees charged by Lawyer Akwasi Afrifa in the corruption allegations leveled against the Chief Justice, Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah
Speaking on Good Morning Africa on Pan African Television on Wednesday, July 14, monitored by GhanaPlus.com he said given meaning, gymnastic could only mean the money was intended to pay bribe or to sought some spiritual means (juju) to get a favourable outcome of his case.
“And the other side of the story is, let look at the legal fees charged by Afrifa and then Ogyeedom also accused Afrifa of some gymnastic fees, 100,000 for gymnastic fees, ways and means so what is this $100,000 for?. Which he subsequent even asked him to refund and the information we have is that he has even refunded initial US$25, 000,”.
“Are these legal fees?, because we all know, if you want to make meaning into gymnastic, they are talking about ways and means either Juju or going to pay bribe to ensure you get a favourable result”, he said.
Dr Kwaku Mensah Mawutor said no lawyer could assure his or her client the outcome of their cases if indeed the money was collected for such purpose and advised the development must not be taken lightly because it boils down on ethic of the law profession.
Petition against Lawyer Akwasi Afrifa
Lawyer Akwasi Afrifa, a legal practitioner in a petition filed against him by his client and Chief of Gomoa Afransi in the Central Region, Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta VI to hurl him before the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council (GLC) said the lawyer after charging his legal fees of GHȻ300, 000 demanded US$100,000 to enable him do “some ways and means (gymnastics)” on his case in order to get a favourable judgments from the court.
However, the money was not used for the intended purpose.
Ogyeedom said he fired Mr Afrifa as his lawyer and demanded a refund of his money, but only succeeded in getting US$ 25,000 remaining a balance of US$75,000 which he wants the General Legal Council to help him recover.
