Morocco wants get rid of the label “underachievers” in Afcon
Morocco wants to get rid of the label “underachievers” in the Africa Cup of Nations championship.
Chelsea attacker Ziyech, who led their qualification with three goals, has been excluded from the squad because coach Vahid Halilhodzic is not happy with his behaviour.
Halilhodzic took over for Frenchman Herve Renard in 2019 after Morocco suffered a stunning last-16 loss to Benin in the previous Cup of Nations, and national football federation head Fouzi Lekjaa set a very high goal.
“The new coach has been tasked with reaching the semi-finals of the next Africa Cup of Nations. Failure to achieve that target will automatically result in the termination of the contract,” said Lekjaa.
Halilhodzic will be hoping that attackers Ayoub el Kaabi and Ryan Mmaee can replicate their scoring form from World Cup qualification late last year, when they combined for nine goals.
The Atlas Lions are in group C with Ghana, Gabon, and Comoros.
