Danny Welbeck would have liked a second goal for Brighton against Southamprton

Danny Welbeck says he would have liked a second goal for Brighton against Southampton in the Premier League game which was played on Sunday.

When it looked that a double goal was on the way, Danny Welbeck’s eyes lighted up.

It would have been his first two-goal performance in a Premier League match since helping Arsenal defeat Southampton 3-2 in 2018.

However, when he attempted to cut the pass, defender Mohammed Salisu stepped in and pushed the ball into his own net.

With a predatory close-range drive in the second minute of Sunday’s encounter at the Amex, Welbeck opened the score.

Then he demonstrated his all-around ability by winning the ball in his own half and creating a spectacular move involving Enock Mwepu and Leandro Trossard.

He appeared to be about to finish it until Salisu stepped in to put the ball into his net.

“It was good play. I remember getting the ball off them,” he said.

“Enock played it down the line, then I cut inside, played in Leo and then I was unfortunate not to get on the end if it,”

He added with a smile: “I was a little bit frustrated that the defender got there before me but it was a nice goal,”

Welbeck signed for Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion on 18 October 2020 on a free transfer on a one-year contract.

He made his debut two weeks later, coming on as a substitute for Leandro Trossard in a 2-1 away defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
