At its 15th convocation on Saturday, 767 students from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa in the Western Region, received a variety of degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
Of the total, 80 graduates obtained postgraduate degrees, including 13 Doctor of Philosophy degrees, 582 first-degree graduates from their respective engineering courses, 7 diploma graduates, and 98 certificate graduates.
The UMaT Alumni Association sponsored the Vice Chancellor’s overall best-graduating student award, which went to Mr. Abdul-Rahman Ishaak of the Department of Mining Engineering.
Along with a certificate, he also received a laptop computer and GH¢2,000.00 in cash.
Mr. Hermas Abaah Akolgo and Mr. Roland Blisette, for the Senior and Junior Staff Categories, received this year’s Best Workers Awards, which the university created to encourage all staff to give it their all and work in the university’s interest. Each received a citation and a GHC2,500 cash reward.
During his speech, UMaT Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah revealed that the Minerals Engineering Department had published 53 articles and had been awarded the title of Department with the Highest Number of

“The University continues to support responsible mining and for the year under consideration, they observed the Sustainable Small scale Mining Awareness Day on 2nd June by engaging the Akoon Community Mine to create awareness on the need to adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly methods in Artisanal and Small-scale mining,” he said.

There will be more of these community schools built in other towns with abundant mineral resources, according to Prof. Amankwah.
Furthermore, he noted that the University’s Annual Creativity and Career Fair was held in order to encourage creativity among its student body. The Municipality’s junior and senior high schools were allowed access to the site so they could see the laboratories and talk with the professors.

UMaT would create and eventually give two of the motorised wheelchairs to the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital as part of the university’s Corporate Social Responsibility.”
