Vida Essel-LampteyA Security Analyst and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Security, Disaster and Emergency Studies, Dr Ishmael Norman has advice the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akufo Dampare to clamp down on security analyst in the country who engage in securitization of criminal events.
That he said was because their activities create unnecessary fear and panic hence must not be tolerated.
Dr Norman gave the advice on JoyNews current affairs programme PM Express on Tuesday, November 9, monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
He was contributing to the topic “Rebranding the Ghana Police Service . The Dampare Effect” and speaking on strategies to deal with current challenges confronting the service to be specific.
Don’t escalate localize crime to national security issues – Dr Norman
Dr Norman noted , localized criminal event must remain same and not escalated to the level of national security issues, something he believes some of the analyst are fond of.
According to him, the IGP must take actions to restore orderliness in that area just as he has done with prophet and prophecies in recent times.
“We have to stop securitizing every event in this country. Arm robbery at Weija is a localized event, it should not be securitize to the point where it becomes nationalize. To the point where it becomes a national security issues,” Dr Norman said.
“Arm robbery in a locality should be looked at as arm robbery in a locality so my advice , my suggestion to the IGP is just as he is been arresting prophets while making claims about peoples death and all of that. I think there should be some sought of self control and if they don’t control themselves in the securitization of emerging criminal event, the IGP should go after those people because it create an unnecessary fear and panic”, the Security Analyst said.
