Family accuses police of murdering man whiles in cell, calls on IGP for justice
A family is accusing some police officers in Sekondi-Takoradi of murdering a 53-year-old taxi driver while he was in police custody.
According to reports, the victim, Joseph Enchie was arrested on December 25, 2021, by some police officers in Sekondi after he was accused of knocking one of the officers with his vehicle at a barrier.
After the family got information of the victim’s arrest, they journeyed to the Sekondi Police Station the next day and upon reaching there, the man was not in a cell, but rather in a bodybag.
A family member who spoke to Skyy Power 93.5FM said, they were confused at first and began to question the officers which information was given that, he hanged himself with his jeans trouser.
A press conference was organised by the family at the Fijai Taxi Station which they demanded justice and called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
During the press conference, Mr Kwame Appiah, the younger brother of the victim said, “The reports the police are giving is not factual, because people go into police cells with only underwear so where from the jeans?.”
Also, a postmortem has been conducted on the deceased by experts which states that he did not hang himself but died of a different course which the police are refusing to make the results public.
Mr Appiah further indicated that police have conducted a second postmortem after disagreeing with the first results and are still refusing to make the second results public because they are guilty of killing the deceased.
However, they are calling on the IGP, Mr Akuffo Dampare to come to their aid to hold the police officers involved accountable and also make the postmortem results public since they sense foul play.
