Fisherfolks resume fishing activities after Close Season – Skyy Power FM

Fishing activities resumed when the sea was opened to fisher folks after being closed from July 1st to August 1st.

The halt of fishing activities on the sea known as the closed season was a government initiative to ensure fish conservation during its breeding period so that fishermen can get the maximum benefit.

The Skyy News team was at the Bosomtwe Sam Fishing Harbour to monitor the situation and see how the close season benefited them.

Speaking to Skyy News, some of the Fishermen Indicated that the close season was a good initiative but are requesting a change of date which they believe will benefit them.

A fisherman said, “The close season is good, a very good initiative by the government, but the truth is that the date is not too favourable for us, we would have preferred May-June. July to August is the best season to fish and closing the sea for us in that period really affects us financially.”

They also lamented about the premix fuel used for their fishing activities saying that, the fuel must be available at all times for purchase

“The fuel must be available at all times for purchase, how can we maximise our effort when we don’t get fuel for activities? Before the end of the close season when the government provided us with fuel, how can you provide us with fuel two days before the end of the close season? These are some of our challenges,” they added.
