Vida Essel-LampteyOffice of the Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has disputed claims that he celebrated his 65th birthday with an E-Levy cake.
Special aide to the Majority Leader Maxwell Ofosu Boakye has clarified that “the E-Levy cake pictures at the Majority Leader’s birthday party was not the official cake for the birthday party. The E-levy cake was part of the gifts presented to Hon Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu but there was an official birthday cake for the programme”.
Maxwell Ofosu Boakye, who doubles as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Suame, gave the clarifications while speaking on Akoma FM‘s current affairs and political show GhanAkoma Thursday, February 10.
He told host of the show Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that “even if the E-Levy cake was the official cake for Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, we the Majority wouldn’t have shied away from it because we have been pushing for the passage of the E-Levy bill”.
Pictures and videos of E-Levy cake at the Majority Leader’s birthday party in Kumasi has flooded social media.
The situation has sparked divided sentiments from the public with a section of Ghanaians lashing out at the government for flaunting an ‘E-levy cake at leader’s birthday party’.
Scores of officials of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) including the Vice President and his wife were in attendance.
Though widely circulated videos suggest there was an E-Levy-designed cake, the aide to the Majority Leader differed with claims that “the official cake which the birthday man Majority Leader and his wife together with Vice President and his wife cut wasn’t the E-Levy cake, it’s so obvious that the E-Levy cake has taken center stage and has even outshone the purpose of the main birthday party because of the popularity of the E-Levy and its associate tension it has caused both Majority and Minority in Parliament.”
