Nigerian nationals dominate prostitution business in Sekondi

Sekondi, a suburb of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis has now become a commercial sex hub in the Western Region as it continues growing.

Known as a fishing community and also the regional capital, Sekondi has now been invaded by young female commercial sex workers which some are indigenous people and the majority are foreigners especially Nigerians.

Now that the activities are at an alarming rate, residents and assembly members are concerned as they are now trying their best to control the situation.

Speaking to the assemblyman in the area, Mr Abu Seidu revealed that, Young girls as old as 10 years are now involved in commercial sex work at the Sekondi Railway Station.

Also, a resident who is in direct contact with these young commercial sex workers made it known to Skyy Power 93.5FM that these Nigerian sex workers are trafficked into the country and are charged as much as GHS8000 for a deal with the trafficker.

According to her, the Nigerians have dominated the prostitution business being the majority with a less population being Ghanaians.

Also, they charge their customers as low as GHS15 and as high as GHS20 and they will need to pay as much as GHS100 every day to their trafficker to make up the GHS8000 deal.

She said, “They go into a deal with their trafficker to be transported into Ghana for the prostitution business and when they are here, they will need to work and pay back the money according to their deal.

They have to pay as much as GHS100 cedis every day depending on their deal and if one could not make up for the day, she will have to pay double the next day.”

Not only do they have to pay their traffickers, but they also pay room rents as well concerning where they sleep and use for the servicing.

Public Relations Officer for STMA, John Last said it is rather unfortunate that there is such an issue happening in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. However, the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) is aware of the issue and is taking steps to ensure these young girls desist from the act as well as banishing them from the town.
