A Political Historian and Head of History and Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Samuel Adu-Gyamfi has said no new candidate presented by the opposition National Democratic Congress will be able to outshine the New Patriotic Party’s preferred choices, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Allan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng and win the 2024 elections.
He has therefore, indicated the NDC has no other choice but to present its 2020 Presidential Candidate and Former President, John Dramani Mahama in the next elections.
“………indeed there is also the question of political party capture and state capture that some people believe that the reign of Mahama, the former President has subsisted because he has control over the party and also his people have some degree of some control over the party and some group believe that that gen must been broken to allow for a certain fair competition to subsist and so the process is also questioning the internal democratic credentials of the NDC whether indeed the electoral college within the NDC would be unfettered to make a determination as to who leads the party, either the former president himself or any other person but I have come to this juncture to say that they have no option that to go with former President Mahama because no candidate that the NDC president can be able to outclass or outpace Mahamudu Bawumia or Allan Kyeremanteng and I say this with utmost authority and with no shadow is turning or equivocation,” he said.
Mr Adu-Gyamfi made the assertion in an interaction on TV3’s TheKeyPoint on Saturday, April 21, 2021 monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
The Political Science Lecturer said current factions and crises in the party regardless, Mahama remains the party’s best option if they wish to return to power any time soon and advised them to smoke the peace pipe going forward.
He added that decisions whether to maintain the former President or present a new candidate although lies in the bosom of the party, it should be governed by the party’s principles, probity, accountability and transparency.
“It is quite clear that the NDC is going through a certain process, they need to be able to argue but in their discourse to come to that kind of birthing of a leader for 2024 they must bury hatches, they must smoke the peace pipe and they should not be condescending, they must ensure that whatever process they are going through must be benchmark on the philosophical and ideological construct of the party, probity accountability and social justice”.
