The National Service Scheme (NSS) today held a Remembrance Day ceremony for all fallen heroes since the establishment of the scheme 50 years ago.
Speaking at the ceremony the Western Regional Director of the National Service Scheme Okatakyie Amankwa Afrifa said the occasion was a solemn one to help remember the souls of departed service personnel.
He also used the occasion to commend all who have in diverse ways supported national service personnel throughout the 50 years of existence of the scheme.
He said, “While we remember our people here today, we also wish to use this opportunity to pat the shoulders of all who have in diverse ways supported our national service personnel throughout the 50 years of the scheme.”
“We are grateful to all who have laid down their lives to the service of the nation.”
The Western Regional Minister Dr. Kobby Okyere Darko Mensah said over the years, the National Service Scheme has provided the platform for young graduates to acquire practical experience, develop essential skills and contribute to the growth of the country.
He encouraged Ghanaians to build a society where the spirit of volunteerism is cherished and selflessness is celebrated.
“The scheme has not only transformed the lives of National Service Personnel but also left a lasting impact on the communities they have served.”
“We pay homage to every individual who has participated in the scheme, they have shown us the power of service and the communities they have served can attest to the positive development they have initiated and projects they have implemented,” the Minister said.
Deputy Education Minister John Ntim Fordjour said as the Scheme celebrates its 50th anniversary, we should remember the impact that it has had on the nation’s development and cohesion.
