Poland says 35,000 refugees have arrived from Ukraine in 24 hours

Tens of thousands of refugees from Ukraine have arrived in Poland after fleeing Russian attacks, the government says.

“In the past 24 hours, 35,000 people have crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border towards Poland,” Deputy Interior Minister Pavel Szefernaker told public broadcaster TVP on Friday evening.

Most are women and children, he said, but there were also men outside of the 18-to-60 age range who face conscription in Ukraine.

The processing of refugees on the Ukrainian side is slowing down because the war, is causing failures in the operating system used by the Ukrainian border guards, Szefernaker added.

Poland is able to process up to 50,000 refugees from Ukraine at the border every day, he said.

A dpa reporter at the Medyka-Shegyni crossing reported that refugees, including many travelling by foot, were waiting for hours to be processed.
