Police investigate Accra Zoo death



An investigation by the Ghana Police has commenced into the death of a man who was allegedly mauled by a lion at the Accra Zoo.

A statement released by the Ghana Police said they are working together with the management of Accra Zoo and the Forestry Commission on the death of the victim.

The victim was found dead on Sunday, August 28, in the Lions enclosure and is yet to be identified.

The statement said, “After the necessary forensic examination of the scene, the body was removed and has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.”

They further stated that they are working with the management of the zoo and the Forestry Commission to get to the bottom of this unfortunate incident.

Mr John Allotey who is the Cheif Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forestry Commission said during a routine patrol by the zoo officials at noon on the day of the incident, they noticed the man had jumped the fences and entered the lion’s enclosure.

The reason for his intrusion is yet to be known, he added.

The statement said the victim was attacked by one of the lions and died shortly after sustaining some severe injuries.
