Resilient engineering is needed to develop Ghana and Africa – George Asamani – Skyy Power FM
The Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at Project Management Institute (PMI), Mr George Asamani says what Ghana and Africa need to develop and make an impact is resilient engineering.
Speaking to Skyy News on the sidelines of the Ghana Institute of Engineering Conference in Takoradi on Wednesday, March 29, Mr Asamani explained that resilient engineering is about driving solutions and making an impact in Ghana and Africa now and beyond.
He indicated that what is needed to make this achievable is a study pipeline of talents and ideas which are to be protected and acted on.
Mr Asamani said, “We need up-and-coming engineers, especially the youth, the youth needs to be groomed for leadership positions… the second I mentioned was ideas and ways of protecting them, typically when people come up with ideas one of the first things that hinder them is the financial means to execute them, my question to the audience was, why don’t those engineers focus on creating ideas and protecting those ideas which will be solving global problems. When you have an idea that can solve global problems, people will come looking for you in all parts of the world.”
Mr Asamani added that the Project Management Institute (PMI) and engineers have a symbiotic relationship and he explained that what engineers do is to create and project managers deliver.
“One has to create and design and the other has to make sure the idea or the work crosses the finish line in the best way possible (On time, within budget, within scope).”
“Looking at different industries we normally ask how can we further improve the success, so for example in the construction industry, for every billion dollars spent, a hundred and twenty-seven million dollars ($127M) is wasted.”
“So PMI has looked at ways to reduce that waste in the construction sector and all other sectors and the way forward is for engineers to work more with qualified and certified Project managers to improve the outcome of their projects,” he added.
