Sekondi MP's appointment as Tourism Minister met with mixed reactions

Reactions to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nomination of Mr. Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer as the new Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture have been divided among certain citizens of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

Some people thought his selection was a positive move, but others claimed he wouldn’t advance the industry.

In an interview with the media, Mr. Emmanuel Williams, a Sekondi resident, expressed his doubts about Mr. Mercer’s ability to guide the Ministry towards the necessary reform.

He claimed that there had not been enough development projects that the residents of Sekondi Constituency could be proud of during his time serving as their MP.

Mr Williams added: “Even when he was appointed as Deputy Minister for Energy, he did nothing to improve the energy sector, therefore, he is not the right person for the ministerial appointment for the Tourism, Arts and Culture ministry”

Mr Felix Mensah, another resident, said: “For the past seven years that he has been in office, there is nothing that I can pinpoint that has been done by him, and that means he cannot do the job.

“I think this reshuffling by the President was not in the interest of the country but just felt Ghanaians needed a Valentine’s gift, so he just did that.”

However, another resident, Mr. Isaac Konduah, asserted that he trusted Mr. Mercer’s leadership abilities and that he would be able to handle the challenge at hand.

“He has strong leadership qualities needed to transform the Tourism, Arts and Culture ministry, that is why the President nominated him, so I believe he will do an excellent job,” he said.
