Shama District to construct 19 placenta pits
Authorities of the Shama District Assembly intend to construct placenta pits across the district.
The move by the district is to arrest a possible health hazard in the district.
Currently, the district has about 19 health facilities providing maternity service to the good people of the district.
However, the health facilities do not have a placenta pit.
A placenta pit is a waste disposal pit for after birth wastes.
Speaking to Skyy Power 93.5FM on the sideline of the annual review program, District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Ebenezer Dadzie noted that the assembly will collaborate with the Health Directorate to construct placenta pits across the district.
Adding that, the Assembly is poised to improve health delivery in the district.
“As an assembly we have taken cognizance of the challenging confronting health delivery in the district, going forward we will collaborate with the Health Directorate to construct placenta pits for the health centres in the district.”
“Besides, some health facilities don’t have light and access roads to the facilities are poor…this lies in our domain so we will team up with the directorate to reshape the road forthwith.”
Mrs Judith Okai, Shama Health Director seized the opportunity to stress the need for placenta pits.
She explains that the absence of these pits poses serious environmental health hard to residents in the district.
“We provide maternity service to over 19 health facilities in the district unfortunately we do not have placenta pits in these facilities”
“So what we do is to give the placenta to the mother to send it home to dispose them off by burying them … unfortunately they fail to properly dispose them off but ends up being a feed for domestic animals which poses serious health issues.”
