The Heavy Duty Drivers Association of General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union of TUC Ghana, are calling on investors and the government to provide rest stops for truck drivers who travel long distances to help reduce the rate of accidents in the country.

Mr Anthony Amissah, the chairman of the association speaking on Skyy Power 93.5FM made it known the aim of the group is to help reduce road accidents in the country especially the ones involving trucks.

He indicated more than ninety per cent (90%) of road accidents is from the part of drivers and since there are some unprofessional and unqualified drivers in the truck driving sector, their aim is to educate them to become professionals and also weed the bad ones out.

He went further to appeal to private investors for rest stops along vantage areas for truck drivers who will want to rest after a long journey for a bit of refreshment before continuing their journey.

“Places like Mankessim, Cape Coast, Nkwakwa, Kumasi and other towns along the roads will be good for rest stops to be established to encourage drivers to rest when they are tired before continue their journey.”

“We have sighted some places that we will recommend for investors to build their rest stops which our members will then be directed to stop and refresh there whenever they are on a journey.”
