UMaT organises 17th matriculation ceremony

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa has virtually held its 17th matriculation ceremony.

Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah, the Vice-Chancellor, in his address, welcomed the students and said UMaT this year admitted 2,393 first-year undergraduates, out of which 21 per cent were females.

He said the University would continue with its gender mainstreaming policy until they attained the 50 per cent female participation.

The Vice-Chancellor said for the first time, the University admitted Diploma students to top-up their education in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

He announced that UMaT was selected to pilot the Ministry of Education’s novel Engineering Scholarship for the needy, and 50 of such students who were identified in several communities across the country would be sponsored by the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST).

In addition, UMaT is piloting the novel Non-science to Engineering Programme with 100 students.

He expressed appreciation to the Minister of Education for the trust reposed in UMaT, stressing that “I know he took the right decisions by selecting UMaT”.

At the postgraduate level,106 students were admitted during the second admission season, bringing the total number to 492, representing 9% of the total student population of more than 5,300, he said.

The Vice-chancellor noted that the University admitted only 37 foreign students this year, adding there were plans to increase the numbers in the years ahead.
