Western Region is working towards becoming model region of Ghana – Skyy Power FM

The Western Regional Minister Dr Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah says the Western Region wants to be the Model Region for Ghana through entrepreneurial governance.

He says we need to have in place a system that puts the Western Region as an enterprise and also mainstreams the youth throughout the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).

Speaking at the inauguration of the Roland Rice factory in collaboration with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation in the Shama District on Thursday, May 15, the Regional Minister said all component of their vision has come together.

Dr Okyere Darko added that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government believes in production because that is the only way the country can get off all the unnecessary conditions and conditionality that come in the way of the country.

He says with this, Ghanaians need to fully support the private sector.

He said, “If Ghana supports the private sector, Ghana will be the number one country to compete with anybody in any part of the world…”

“One of the biggest challenges in Ghana is that we turn not to support the private sector, Meanwhile it is the private sector that is doing everything… When Ghana wanted to keep its lands as Ghanaian own lands, it took a businessman, Wilson Sey to go to London to plead with Queen Victoria for Ghana to keep its lands. Paa Grant, also a businessman spent his money to help Ghana gain independence and all these people are from the Western Region but we don’t celebrate them enough.”

The Minister said the only sure way Ghana can get out of poverty and be a competitive country is to grow the private sector and advise graduates to create solutions for themselves by going into entrepreneurship.

“We need to start telling the young people that when you are in school, you should start thinking of a Plan B. Start thinking of what you will do for yourself as a business when you finish, and as a graduate, you become part of the solution rather than the problem.”
