Youth throw support for upcoming Sekondi-Takoradi demo

In the wake of the upcoming demonstration against poor infrastructures to hit Sekondi-Takoradi on October 27, some youths in the Metropolis who spoke to Skyy News say they are in full support of the exercise.

The demonstration dubbed Sekondi Takoradi Deserves Better is an agitation to force the heads of various institution repsonsible for development to be accountable and up their game.

From the opinions of some youth, they are in support as the demonstraton will draw the attention of authorities to issues of the deplorable state of infrastructure, particularly roads in the Metropolis.

They stated the authorities are reluctant to perform their duties because they have not been called out.

They also sighted how the deplorable roads are taking lives of innocent individuals from time to time.

Some youths said, “The poor infrastructure, particularly roads is causing Takoradi to lose out, investors are no more interested in our city, businesses are dying out and the youth keep migrating out of the city to their cities and countries.”

“We are in full support of the demonstration and we will gladly join, we are losing out as a city, the place looks deserted and we are to take our destiny our own hands, if the leaders will not do anything about the situation, I have friends who have died as a resul of potholes on the Agona Nkwanta-Takoradi stretch.”

“Accra keeps developing, the Western Region produces over 60% of the coutries resources but nothing to show for, this demonstration neccessary and needed.”

Background:

The organiser of the upcoming demonstration in the Western Region dubbed Sekondi-Takoradi Deserves Better, Mr Samuel Gyimah Appiah, popularly known as Bishop says the action is not an attack on any political leader but on heads of various institutions responsible for development.

He says there is a need for this action since the city has been deprived of the needed development and infrastructures, as roads keep deteriorating and businesses keep collapsing with no one to hold accountable.

He says this peaceful demonstration is to seek accountability from institutional heads and to get the city the development it deserves.

Mr. Samuel Gyimah added that the demonstration is scheduled to come off on the 27th of October 2023.

Addressing some challenges in the region, he said, “Cape Coast has two stadiums, now let us come to Sekondi-Takoradi, which is even bigger than Cape Coast, the stadium is not working, we don’t have anything to write about our stadium. I cried when I saw it the last time.

We then came to the Center for National Culture (CNC), about twenty years ago, personally, the state that the centre was in was way better than now, you can go there and check for yourself.”

“Again, coming to our internal problems, the traffic lights at Effiakuma have not been working for the past five years, whenever they report, it falls on deaf ears, meanwhile there are people in offices who are obligated to help solve these petty issues.”

“The road from Fijai to Appollo is an issue not to be talked about, because of the ongoing construction around Bu Junction through to Kwesimintsin Junction, the big trucks with Cocoa and Bauxite are deploying the roads.”

He says this demonstration is not politically influenced but it is a call by the youth of the Metropolis.

“We don’t have any self-interest, we just want the betterment of Sekondi-Takoradi, so we’re going to block the road. The tag on this demonstration is Hashtag, Sekondi-Takoradi deserves better so the MP for Sekondi, Hon. Egyapa Mercer, is in support of whatever is going on just that people want to politicize this demonstration:

He says their expectation in this demonstration is to see the maintenance culture being implemented and underperforming heads of institutions responsible for the development must be dismissed.
