A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Godwin Edudzi Tameklo has asked the Finance Minister, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta to step down in the interest of the country.
He said sometimes in leadership hard and decisive decisions are needed not necessarily for the want of it but for the collective good of the masses.
Citing the story of the biblical Jonah, he said Jonah could have decided to stay on board the ship when he was found to be the cause of the storm but offered to be thrown off to save the ship and other lives on board and that Mr Ofori-Atta must do in the wake of Ghana’s raging economic storm.
He said Jonah upon throwing himself off the ship, got swallowed but eventually saved himself, the ship and the others onboard adding “That is what you do in leadership”.
Edudzi Tameklo was speaking on NewDay on TV3 on Tuesday, November, 22 monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
The renowned legal practitioner, opined Mr Ofori-Atta’s administration has been characterized by nothing but hardships, hence the call on him to emulate the example of the biblical personality.
“Am really, really surprise that Mr Ken Ofori-Atta is still holding on to the position. I do not know what in God’s name he is sitting on because you see everything about Ken Ofori Atta, his touch on this economy is the reason why today we are all suffering. The unbridled pain, hardships in the system is attributed to Mr Ken Ofori-Atta and the work of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia .
“Look, sometimes in leadership you would want to take decisions not necessarily because you like it but you take that decision in order to save the collective,” Edudzi Tameklo said.
“And I always cite the biblical example of Jonah, he could have insisted that he want to be on that ship and all of them would have drown but he jumped, he was forced out, he got swallowed, eventually, he saved himself, he saved the ship and he saved the others. That is what you do in leadership”.
Liz Truss, Kwasi Kwarteng has set the Jonah example – Edudzi Tameklo
For such example of Jonah, Edudzi Tameklo said UK‘s former Prime Minister, Liz Truss and Chancellor of the Exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng have lived up to that.
“Look, Liz Truss has given a clear demonstration of that together with Mr Kwarteng that when the going get tough, sometimes, you must take the fall in order to save the ship”.
Anas Aremeyaw Anas drads Ofori-Atta, Adu Boahen before CHRAJ
The NDC member was reacting to Tiger Eye’s Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and Former Minister of State in Charge of Finance, Mr Charles Adu Boahen over an allege conflict of interest.
The investigative body alleges the two public officials have engaged in a conflict of interest using their personal companies in transacting government businesses.
“The allegations are that there is conflict of interest in terms of their official duties as public officers and the companies in which they have interest in terms of government bonds and so the case is going through the standard process of assessment in order to make sure that it meets procedural requirement under the Commission’s regulation as well as whether it is really within the mandate of the Commission. Based on that, we will then decide what next steps to take,” CHRAJ Commissioner, Joseph Whittal told JoyNews.
