Foreign Policy and Security Analyst, Adib Saani has slammed the immediate past National Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party, Mr Freddie Blay following his decision to represent the four accomplices of galamsey kingpin, Aisha Hung in court.
Ghanaian media report, Mr Blay represented the four accused persons, identified as Jong Li Huang, Huang Jei and Huiad Hua and another standing trail for engaging in sales and purchases of minerals without license.
But reacting to the news on TV3 GhanaTonight monitored by GhanaPlus.com, Mr Saani said Mr Blay and his actions lack principles.
He noted his actions although, legally right, his standing in Ghana’s political environment makes the decision wrong adding that its only increases the most touted perception that some big names in the political scene are involved in the canker.
Man must eat but put principles before anything – Saani
He opined the renowned politician could have exercise restraint in the interest of the country adding “Even though man must feed, you have to put before you principles before anything”.
“As you rightly mention, he’s done nothing wrong. We are a country that is governed by the rule of law. Everybody has the right to a representation. However, I think his actions lack principles. Am a business man Alfred, on daily basis I get a lot of business, I do GPS tracking for security reasons but there are certain situations people approach you because they want to track their spouses and am force to reject it because mine is meant for security purposes”.
“Even though man must feed, you have to put before you principles before anything and his acceptance to defend the individuals only adds to the deep suspicion people have about the involvement of certain powerful figures in the whole galamsey quagmire… so this only adds to the suspicions and it is going to leave a lot of question than answers so in as much as it is not illegal for him to defend, he could have exercise better judgment or so to speak principles before even accepting the offer in the first place”.
Mr Saani raised concerns about the extent of destruction galamsey has caused the country and indicated its still baffles him as to why Mr Blay overlooked all and that of his status in the country to defend them.
“And ask yourself when the last time Hon Freddie Blay defended anyone was. And considering the painful nature of the whole galamsey issue, the fact that they are destroying the water bodies, the fact that it has brought us national shame and even international disgrace and the fact that they are destroying the pride of the nation, the cocoa farms and for a state man such as Hon Freddie Blay rise up to the occasion to defend people who are destroying the country is something I really find difficult to understand and like I indicated without missing words, he lacks principles,” Mr Saani lamented.
