IMF: “We will negotiate a good deal” – Akufo-Addo assures Ghanaians

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians, his government will negotiate a good deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Ghana turned to the IMF early this month to seek support for it programmes in the wake of recent economic difficulties in the country.

A statement from the Ministry of Information sighted by GhanaPlus.com said the President has authorized the Mr of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta to begin discussions with the IMF.

The statement signed by the Minster of Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said the directive follows a  telephone conversation the President had with the IMF Managing Director on the country’s readiness to engaged the fund.

The decision to turn to the international organization which undertakes a regular health check of the economic and financial policies of its 190 member is to support government’s quest to bounce back from its current economic crises speedily.

“The engagement with the IMF will  seek to balance of payment support as part of a broader effort quicken Ghana’s build back in the face of induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine crises”.

 The decision  has however, not been received well by many Ghanaians who are of the fear, the Fund will come with its conditionalities which will have negative impact on the ordinary Ghanaian.

But, addressing participants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s National Delegate Conference at the Accra Sport Stadium on Saturday, July 16, monitored by GhanaPlus.com, he said government will negotiate a good deal that will help the country’s economy return to its glorious days.

“We will negotiate a good deal, a deal that will allow us to build a strong economy that we had before,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.
