Vida Essel-LampteyThe ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding an unqualified apology from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its three-time flagbearer John Dramani Mahama for rejecting the 2020 elections results without evidence.
In the run-up to the December 17 National Delegates Congress, eventual National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia disclosed that the party’s evidence brought forth by then National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo to challenge the 2020 defeat was not enough.
He revealed how law luminary Tsatsu Tsikata questioned the basis of Mr Ofosu Ampofo’s evidence to challenge the presidential elections.
The leading opposition party, however, went to court though the petition was subsequently unanimously dismissed by the seven justices of the apex court of Ghana.
At a press conference on Wednesday, December 21, General Secretary of the NPP Justin Frimpong Kodua said the NDC only sought to destabilise the country by rejecting the results.
He is, therefore, demanding an unqualified apology from Mr Mahama, who led the NDC to the polls, and the party to the venerable Supreme Court justices and the people of Ghana, as a whole.
“We therefore wish to reiterate our demand from John Dramani Mahama and the NDC leadership on account of their own confession to render an unqualified apology first to the nation’s judiciary which they have bastardised without justification and to the rest of the country for wasting our precious time and creating unnecessary tension in the aftermath of the 2020 elections.
“They must render an unqualified apology to the good people of Ghana.”
The press conference comes three days after the NDC elected its new crop of leaders for the next four years.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who has been the General Secretary of the party since 2005, was elected National Chairman while Fifi Fiavi Kwetey took his position.
