We will abolish E-levy within 100 days in power -NDC pledges

The National Democratic Congress(NDC) has said it will abolish the electronic transaction levy (E-levy)  if it reclaims power in 2025.

The General Secretary of the party, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia said , the party will stop at nothing to abolish the tax which he described as a “nuisance” tax.

The NDC stalwart made the comment during the Yentua Demo held in Accra on Thursday, February 10.

3news.com report, the astute politician indicated that “this is a pledge he is making on behalf of his party in the unlikely situation the Eighth Parliament passes the bill”.

The Member of Parliament for the Ningo Prampram Constituency, Mr Samuel Nartey George on his part, said the NDC will abolish the tax in its first 100 days in office.

“Well, I am glad my General Secretary has said it. People have been asking and you are hearing it today,” Sam George as affectionately called told Media General‘s Johnnie Hughes at Obra Spot, the converging point of the Yentua Demo.

“We have made a pledge to the Ghanaian people [that] when the NDC comes into power, in the first 100 days we will abolish it because it is a nuisance tax,” Sam George added.

E-Levy brouhaha

Ghana, especially, its parliament is currently divided following the government’s announcement of a proposed electronic transaction levy (e-levy) seeking to tax Ghanaians some 1.75% on all electronic transactions above ₵100 and applicable to senders only.

Now pegged at 1.5%, government has noted some projected ₵6.9billion is expected to be generated with its implementation and will be used to fund YouStart, an initiative to support young people to venture into entrepreneurship.

However, since its introduction the e-levy has divided the country, its citizens as well as its parliament.

Already, two physical fights have been recorded in Parliament all because of the e-levy.

Once enviable friendship between the Speaker and the Majority leader of Ghana’s Parliament also seem to have been affected by the proposed tax even before it is passed.

Again, series of demonstrations have been held against the levy, one of such, the Yentua Demo was held today in Accra.
