With due respect, we won't compromise holding this gov't accountable: Murtala tells Asantehene

The Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central Constituency, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala has reacted to the call by the Asantehene to Members of Parliament not to frustrate government business.

According to him, all though, they acknowledge the call, they will not compromise in holding the government accountable since they owe it to the people whom they represent.

Mr Murtala added as far as the 2022 budget and the proposed e-levy was concerned it was nothing but a tyranny  and that they will not relent in their effort to call out the government until their concerns are heard.

With due respect to his Royal Highness Asantehene , we listen to you advice but we will not compromise holding this government accountable as a matter of fact it has to do with the rejection of the e-levy that will put us in a bad light we may do that and come and apologies to you but we must hold this government accountable what they have presented to the people of this country is nothing but a tyranny we can describe this as a budget,” he siad.

Mr Murtala Mohammed was speaking on TV3 NewDay on Tuesday, December 13 monitored by GhanaPlus.com.

Don’t frustrate government business- Asantehene

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II while speaking at the launch of a Commemorative Gold Coin in his honour at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Sunday December 12 admonished parliament not to frustrate government business.

He said it is neither their role to determine policies for or frustrate  them in performing their duties to the country and its citizenry.

“It is to our good that our representatives in Parliament subject national budget to the most vigorous scrutiny and to call for changes. Government must always also have the humility to acknowledge and embrace useful inputs from all sources.

“But our representatives need to also bear in mind that  it is not the role to  either determine  policy for the executive  or to frustrate them from  performing their legitimate duty,” he the Asantehene said.
