You have your E-levy, solve the problems – Asiedu Nketia tells Gov’t

Vida Essel-LampteyThe General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has asked the government to solve the problems of the country now that the E-levy has been approved.
According to him, the government has blamed every problem in the country on non-passage of the levy seeking to tax 1.5% on electronic transactions including mobile money transactions above 100 adding “Now you have your E-levy, let us see that in the coming weeks, all these problems will be solved or you expose yourself as lying government.”
Mr Asiedu Nketia was speaking to TV3 in Parliament on Wednesday, March 30 on the sideline of the President State of the Nations address.
“I was not in Parliament yesterday but what I saw amounts to abuse of all the processes in the House. So, technically, I do not consider that the right procedures have been followed in whatever approval that has been made but there is a principle that when there is wrong judgement it still remains a judgment until it is revised. We will go back to the drawing table and we will see whether we will proceed to continue with the fight about E-levy,” he said on the programme monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
“But the important thing is that whatever approval that they claimed they have made is rather going to expose them more. Because we are in this country where everything that is not happening well has been blamed on the non-passage of the E-levy, including the payment of contractors, including the non-release of common fund, including the non-release of GETFund, health insurance and all that,” Asiedu Nketia added.
“Now you have your E-levy, let us see that in the coming weeks, all these problems will be solved or you expose yourself as lying government,” the NDC General Secretary emphasized.
Parliament passes E-levy
The Majority in Parliament on Tuesday, March 29, passed the government controversial levy, electronic transaction levy, also known as e-levy after some five(5) month of back and forth with the Minority in Parliament.
The levy was passed after the Minority walked out of Parliament in opposition to the bill announced in the 2022 budget presented to Parliament in November last year.
Earlier various government communicators had noted the levy when passed will help in job creation for the youth, pay contractors, buy fertilizers for farmers, fund free Senior High School(SHS) among many others.
