Brighton manager Graham Potter describes Tariq Lamptey's new position

Graham Potter has emphasized the added dimension that a fit-again Tariq Lamptey brings to Albion.

After a ten-month absence, Lamptey has returned to Premier League action.

However, he has been pushed farther forward in a mostly attacking role, with veteran Joel Veltman slotted in behind him at full-back.

Lamptey has yet to play 90 minutes since his comeback, but he caused trouble, particularly in the first half, when he came on against Newcastle.

He also posed a significant danger as a substitute against Manchester City and Liverpool.

Lamptey might return to wing-back when he accumulates minutes – or as the tactical challenge requires.

But Potter was pleased with how the former Chelsea player was used against the deep-lying Toon.

“It was a little bit of using Tariq’s qualities to help the team as much as we can while we are in a stage where he is not 100% because we are building minutes up,” he told The Argus:

“We wanted to use his attributes and stretch the backline.

“We thought they would be quite deep, we thought we would need runners in behind them, we thought we’d need to challenge their backline in terms of width.

“And obviously it’s easier for Tariq to do that if he doesn’t have quite so much to do defensively.

“But he can do both.”
