Ex-Ashgold goalkeeper Nana Bonsu offers a shocking revelation about national team call-ups

Ex Ashgold goalkeeper Nana Bonsu has revealed that national team coaches don’t select players based only on form but other indicators are used for the selection.

Ghana is set to make a number of changes to their team for the scheduled 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria.

According to reports Felix Afena-Gyan, Leeroy Owusu among others are set to receive call-ups for the crucial game.

Speaking to ghanasportspage ahead of the game, Bonsu emphasized that the call-ups and selections are based on how the coach trusts a player rather than their performance.

“The coaches know what they want and what to choose. Nobody can change it since the coach has appointed his players. From my point of view, I see it as those who will be given the call up are the ones the coach believes in them and also to help. You can’t say someone is doing well but they called the one who is not doing well. Maybe the coach has detected something in that person,” he said.

“If it is based on the performance then, for example, our seniors Sammy Agyei and Olele. I met Olele for the first time when Ghana was trying to qualify for the World Cup. I was also going to U-17 camp and at that time everybody knew Sammy Agyei was on form than Olele so he started some games in the qualifications but after making it to the World Cup Olele made the starting lineup ahead of Sammy Agyei following his splendid performance during some friendly games before the tournament. He demonstrated something good performance at the World Cup for everyone to see he is on the form,” he added.
