FEATURE: Eddie Nketiah among African players who still need a move this summer
Which of the continent’s top stars will still be desperate for a change of scene?
Eddie Nketiah
A season of regression at Arsenal, the Anglo-Ghanaian youngster was underused by Mikel Arteta, starting just four league games and netting just two Premier League goals.
He needs a move away, and appears primed to get it, having failed to come to agreement with the club on a new deal.
Leeds United are reportedly keen, and working alongside Marcelo Bielsa would help Nketiah reignite his career.
West Ham United and Crystal Palace have both also been linked to the attacker.
Percy Tau
Arrived at parent club Brighton & Hove Albion midway through the campaign as Brexit rules changed the work permit regulations, but didn’t live up to the hype.
The Seagulls survived the drop, but Tau managed just 102 minutes across three Prem appearances and it remains to be seen if he still has a future on the south coast.
A move to Royal Antwerp has been mooted, and the South Africa international surely needs to find a destination where he is truly appreciated.
Amine Harit
Having been told by Schalke 04 that his current wage doesn’t work for them in the German second tier, Harit needs a move back to a major league.
He remains a sensational dribbler and a truly fantasy player on his day, but Harit only demonstrates his qualities sporadically, and his immense talent is in danger of fizzling out.
An injury sustained during the offseason may complicate a potential move.
Jean Seri
Once again, Jean Seri—billed as one of the most creative African midfielders of his generation—finds himself in the second tier with Fulham.
2020-21 should have been the bounce-back season for Seri, as he returned to French football with Girondins de Bordeaux, hoping to put the misery of his Fulham spell behind him.
Ultimately, he failed to rediscover the form he showed at OGC Nice, with the talent that once tempted Barcelona largely absent as he failed to register an assist in any of his 10 appearances.
There have been worryingly few rumours linking Seri with a move away from West London.
Ademola Lookman
Another player who’s tested relegation with Fulham, Lookman impressed in patches on loan last term, but was ultimately unable to help the Cottagers evade relegation.
He returns to RB Leipzig at the end of his loan spell, but having been allowed to depart temporarily by the German club last year, and having played a peripheral role the season before, can he really hope to build his career there?
Trabzonspor have been mooted as potential suitors for the forward, but is it too soon for him to move to the Turkish Super Lig?
Amadou Diawara
AS Roma’s reported interest in Granit Xhaka appears to confirm that Diawara is not primed to play a big role at the club under Jose Mourinho.
He’s been tipped to move to Arsenal as a potential makeweight in any Xhaka deal, although whether that deal comes off or not, Diawara surely needs a change of scene.
