Ghana could have won 2010 World Cup if I were to be the coach – Kwesi Appiah

Former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah claims he could have won the 2010 FIFA World Cup for the country if he were to be the coach at the time.

The Black Stars were denied a semifinal berth at the World Cup courtesy of a Luis Suarez handball incident in the quarterfinals.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward prevent a goal-bound header from Ghana’s Dominic Adiyiah in the final minute of extra time at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Suarez essentially produced a save on the line worthy of a goalkeeper and he was shown a straight red card as a result.

Ghana were also awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar, which resulted in Suarez going mental on the touchline and sent the game to a shootout.

Uruguay won the penalty shoot-out to progress to the semifinals with Luis Suarez celebrated for his demonic act.

In an interview, Kwesi Appiah, who served as the assistant coach during the tournament has claimed he could have won the title as the main coach considering the squad depth.

“I were to be the coach of 2010, maybe I can boldly say I am going to win the World Cup because we had quality at the time. The players had played together for about five or six years so the consistency was there but is not like that now”

“In coaching, quality of players you have at a particular time that determines how you can achieve as a coach. You can have the best players around but if you are not able to assemble them well you may not get the results you need”
