How Ghanaian forward Kwame Peprah defied odds to become Orlando Pirates’ top striker
Ghanaian forward Kwame Peprah has defied the odds to become Orlando Pirates’ top striker despite his slow start to the season.
He joined Pirates from Ghana Premier League side King Faisal but his move did not excite several Bucs’ supporters who believed he will struggle to acclimatise to a new environment and in the DStv Premiership earlier in the season.
After failing to score for his new club in 12 games, Peprah bagged a brace on his 13th appearance in December against Marumo Gallants, which was followed by another brace three days later against AmaZulu, as the Soweto giants won both matches.
At only 21-years-old, he has showed signs of being the player that the Buccaneers have been crying for in recent years to score goals for the side after finishing the campaign as the team’s top goal-scorer with his seven strikes and a lot will be expected from him in the new season as he will be familiar will be the league.
What has worked in the player’s advantage this season is that he has had the backing co-coaches Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids who stood by him in difficult times until he re-discovered his form that attracted the club to him.
In all competitions, Peprah has featured 38 times and scored 9 goals, while keeping the likes of Malawian international Gabadinho Mhango, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Zakhele Lepasa out of the team in the process.
Despite his impressive performance for Pirates, Peprah could not help the side qualify for Africa next season as they lost 2-0 to SuperSport in the final match of the South African Premiership season.
Peprah scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists in 29 appearances for King Faisal last term.
