It was a soft penalty against South Africa, says Ghana defender Andy Yiadom
Reading defender, Andy Yiadom has shockingly said that the penalty awarded to Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa was soft.
The Black Stars last Sunday beat the Bafana Bafana 1-0 at the Cape Coast Stadium to win Group G of the African qualifiers to advance to the final round of the qualifiers to next year’s global showpiece.
After the game, the penalty awarded to Ghana has become topical with South Africans and SAFA insisting that it was not a penalty.
While Ghanaians have argued in response that the foul against Daniel Amartey was legit and hence the penalty was the right call, Andy Yiadom has in an interview taken a rather different stance.
According to him, the penalty was a soft one.
“When I was on the pitch it looked like it was a penalty but I have watched it back it was a little bit soft.
“But it is football and I have had them given against me plenty of times and it is one of those things and it was about actually scoring the penalty which we did,” the England-based defender told World Football on the BBC World Service.
He added, “I have been the person who has just touched him and the other person has just fallen over. At the moment I know we won the game and that’s that.”
The penalty controversy is currently before FIFA following a complaint by SAFA.
FIFA will next week refer the protest for a replay to its Disciplinary Committee for a hearing.
