Mohammed Salisu returns from injury to feature for Southampton against Newcastle

Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu returned from injury to feature for Southampton against Newcastle United in English Premier League on Thursday.

The 22-year-old lasted the entire duration of the game as the Saints suffered a 2-1 defeat at St Mary’s.

Stuart Armstrong headed Southampton deservedly in front moments after Armando Broja had blazed over.

Seven minutes later, Newcastle were level through Chris Wood after he lost his marker Salisu and rose highest to connect with an inswinging Jonjo Shelvey cross before Bruno Guimaraes scored a stunning goal to make it 2-1.

The Saints pushed for an equaliser but Salisu’s effort was expertly saved by Martin Dubravka as the visitors held on.

Salisu has been on the sidelines for the past few weeks due to a minor injury he picked up against Aston Villa

The Ghanaian has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League this season.

His return from injury will be a welcome boost for Ghana coach Otto Addo who is expected to name his squad for the final play-offs of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria in the coming days.
