Mohammed Salisu will be a top signing for Newcastle – Journalist Tom Barclay
According to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay, Newcastle United would have to splash the cash and pay ‘top money’ to persuade Southampton to sell Mohammed Salisu this summer.
The Magpies, who had just become the richest club in the world courtesy to a £305 million buyout backed by the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund in October, were Europe’s largest spenders last month, but they failed to welcome Salisu to St James’ Park.
Salisu was close to leaving Southampton for Newcastle during the January transfer window, according to 90min.
According to the report, the central defender is still on the Magpies’ radar ahead of the summer transfer window, despite the fact that a £40 million deal, including add-ons and incentives, fell through.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe was unable to secure his man due to a change in ownership following Sport Republic’s purchase of a majority share in Southampton shortly after the turn of the year.
“I think he would be a really good signing for Newcastle considering the way he’s been playing,” Barclay told Givemesport.
“Let’s see him maintain it for a full season, but they’re going to have to pay absolutely top dollar for him.”
Salisu also received a favorable review from Magpies veteran Alan Shearer last month, indicating that he is attracting attention this season.
