Nigeria first choice goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has expressed his disappointment after being ruled out of the 2022 World Cup play-off against Ghana due to Covid-19.

Okoye, who plies his trade for Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam will miss the much-anticipated clash against the Black Stars on Friday at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

He has been replaced in the squad by Enyimba shot-stopper John Noble.

Speaking to Completesports.com, the enterprising goalkeeper said he is disappointed to miss the crucial World Cup play-off against Ghana.

“I was tested positive a day before my flight and I did a second test also positive, “Okoye told Ojbsports.com.

“It’s unfortunate but I just want to send my love to the people and to the team and best of luck for this big clash.

“I’m very sad to miss this big game but I’m sure the team will do the job and we’ll meet again in Qatar. So best of luck Nigeria and may God bring us victory.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria coach Augustine Eguavoen has hinted Okoye could play in the return leg next week Tuesday if he recovers in time.

Nigeria have arrived in Kumasi for the much-anticipated clash on Friday.

Coach Augustine Eguavoen and his technical team arrived with 25 players for the crucial encounter.

In head-to-head meetings between the two West African rivals, Ghana enjoys the superiority having won 25, drew 19 and lost 12 in 56 clashes.
