Vida Essel-LampteyGhana’s Otto Addo has resigned as the Head Coach of the Ghana National team, the Black Stars of Ghana following the teams exit from the 2022 World Cup on Friday, December 2.
He will concentrate on his role as a trainer scout at German club Borussia Dortmund.
The former Ghana international had stated that he would leave after the World Cup, and he announced his departure after the Black Stars were defeated 2-0 by Uruguay to crash out of the Qatar tournament.
Otto Addo was named interim manager in March and was confirmed as substantive coach after leading the Black Stars to secure World Cup qualification at the expense of Nigeria.
Ghana failed to impress in Qatar, winning one and losing two of three group games. They began their campaign with a 3-2 defeat, recovered against South Korea, and then failed to beat Uruguay.
Georgian De Arrascaeta scored twice for Uruguay to beat Ghana 2-0, but it wasn’t enough to send them to the last 16.
The midfielder opened the scoring after 26 minutes with a close-range header as he followed up Luis Suarez’s saved effort.
Suarez, who was inevitably involved in a replay of the controversial 2010 South Africa World Cup tie, set up De Arrascaeta excellently for his second as he clipped a ball over the top of the Ghana defence for De Arrascaeta to latch onto and fire home.
As the match entered the final ten minutes Uruguay thought they had done enough to reach the knockouts, only for South Korea to score a late winner against group winners Portugal to clinch second spot.
The result means Uruguay and Ghana are both eliminated from the World Cup.
